Our Story
Discover the passion and craftsmanship behind Ayoun Zellige, where centuries-old tradition meets contemporary design.
Founded on Tradition
Ayoun Zellige was founded in 2010 by Amina Berrada, a passionate advocate for Moroccan craftsmanship with deep roots in Fes, the historical center of zellige artistry.
After years of studying under master artisans and recognizing the declining interest in traditional crafts, Amina established Ayoun Zellige with a mission to preserve this cultural heritage while bringing it to a global audience.
Today, we work with over 30 master craftsmen from across Morocco, creating pieces that honor tradition while embracing contemporary aesthetics and applications.
Our Mission
We are dedicated to preserving and promoting the ancient art of Moroccan Zellige while supporting the artisans who create these masterpieces.
Preserve Tradition
We work to document and preserve traditional techniques that have been passed down through generations of Moroccan artisans.
Support Artisans
We ensure fair compensation and recognition for our craftsmen, helping to sustain their livelihoods and communities.
Innovate Design
While honoring tradition, we continuously explore new applications and designs that bring zellige into contemporary spaces.
The Art of Zellige
Zellige is a form of Islamic art that has adorned Moroccan architecture for centuries, requiring immense skill and patience.
A Centuries-Old Tradition
Zellige emerged in Morocco in the 10th century, influenced by geometric patterns in Islamic art. The craft flourished during the Marinid dynasty (13th-15th centuries) when Fes became a center for zellige production.
The intricate mosaics that adorn palaces, mosques, and riads across Morocco are created through a painstaking process that has remained largely unchanged for centuries.
The Creation Process
- 1.Clay Selection: The process begins with selecting and preparing the right clay from the Fes region.
- 2.Forming & Firing: The clay is shaped into square tiles and fired in traditional kilns.
- 3.Glazing & Coloring: Tiles are glazed with natural pigments and fired again to set the colors.
- 4.Cutting & Shaping: Master craftsmen cut the tiles into precise geometric shapes using traditional hammers.
- 5.Assembly: The shaped pieces are assembled face-down into complex patterns.
- 6.Setting: The assembled pattern is set with plaster to create the final piece.
